F A Q - Frequently Asked Questions
What is the CUTLASS Treasure Hunt?
In the last treasure hunt, registered players ran around the Times Square, New York City area solving a series of clues that lead the first lucky team to a treasure of four tickets to the Madonna concert that night. All questions are delivered to players via internet-ready cell phones or other wireless devices (or they can read them via a PC, or even get their clues in audio format over a standard or wireless phone line). Players input their answers to those clues from the field through their web-enabled wireless devices, or they can work with their allies at home, or in a local internet cafe, to send their answers in over the web. After correctly answering the preliminary number of clues, the winning team finds the treasure chest hidden in its secret location.
Can you give me an example of what it's really like?
A player logs on and reads a list of clues, which she might access via her cell phone screen, or maybe her teammate--playing from home--reads her the web page version to her from a home PC. In this case, she picks the clue KISSING from the menu on the screen and reads, "Who's kissing who on Broadway/42nd?" She is then given three hints that are sometimes riddles or dead reckoning clues or trivia. After guessing that the clue site is the WB store, she and her teammates run to the storefront to see a statue of Bugs kissing a lady bunny. One of her team rushes inside to find out the name of the lady rabbit. Lola is the answer. She inputs the word "Lola" on the answer page, the player receives a congratulatory notice and her team's new score is posted for all other players to see.
What if I can't find the answer to a question?
Each question comes with three hints which help teams zero in on the crucial piece of information. If you get stuck, you can move on to another question, usually you need only answer 6 of the 8 preliminary clues to gain access to the final question for the location of the grand prize.
How do I sign up?
Register from link on the current venue main page.
Do I have to solve the questions all by myself?
You can play alone, or form a team. When possible, CUTLASS will help put individuals together into teams.
Can I play even though I won't be in Times Square?
Yes. You can act as "mission control" for a team by using your web browser to track the game's progress and by looking for answers from online sources.
How long does the game take?
About 1.5 to 2.5 hours.
Do I need a cell phone to play?
Most teams should have at least one member with a web-ready phone or similar device, but participation does not require it. You could also play just as effectively using pay phones and by having access to an internet café, or working with a friend at home who can browse the web and receive clues and input your team's answers.
What's the prize?
CASH! Or Madonna concert tickets, or whatever the sponsors provide. Additional prizes and swag are often awarded to the runners-up and most importantly, everyone will have had a wild and crazy night.
